Welcome to 20th/21st/22nd Street NW
Protected Bike Lanes Project
The purpose of this project is to identify a specific route for north- and south-running protected bicycle lanes between Dupont Circle, the western side of Downtown, and the National Mall that provides a safe environment for people biking of all ages and abilities on either 20th, 21st, or 22nd Street NW. For the purposes of project planning, corridors defining the project area include north-south streets of 20th Street, 21st Street, and 22nd Street NW between Florida Avenue NW and Constitution Avenue NW. The 1.5-mile project spans the Dupont Circle, West End, Downtown, and Foggy Bottom neighborhoods, with the National Mall at the southern end.
Several east-west bike facilities currently traverse the areas in and around Downtown. However, there is a large north-south gap in the bicycle network between Dupont Circle and the National Mall.
This project will produce 10% concept plans for protected bike lanes that align with the vision of moveDC.
Project Background

The need for a network of protected bicycle lanes was first conceived in the 2005 Bicycle Master Plan and reiterated in moveDC, the District’s long-range multimodal transportation plan. moveDC identified 21st Street NW as ideal routes for a potential north- and south-running protected bicycle facility that provides a comfortable environment for people biking of all ages and abilities.
Recommended Alternative Information
After reviewing all of the public comments received and the ANC 2A and 2B resolutions, as well as the safety and operational considerations of the three alternatives, DDOT has selected a recommended alternative.
The recommended alternative will be primarily on 20th Street NW, with an east-west connection to 21st Street NW using F and G Streets NW. The recommended alternative includes:
-
Two-way protected bike lane on the west side of 20th Street NW between Connecticut Avenue and F Street NW between Connecticut Avenue and F Street NW
-
Two-way protected bike lane on the east side of 21st Street NW between G Street NW and Constitution Avenue NW
-
One-way protected bike lanes on F and G Streets NW
